i don't think you can really compare the two eras. too many new songs, sure the setlists are gonna be more diverse. to me, 72 had the dead right smack in their prime. there were no bad shows played. pigpen may have been fading away, but it didn't hurt the performances any. i love how the band changed so much from year to year, decade to decade. that's what makes the grateful dead so interesting.
